When Muslims have no problem with free speech
(Australia) How many times have you heard a demand by Islamic groups or their supporters that freedom of expression can sometimes go too far and that whatever they are complaining about (Mohammed cartoons, Salman Rushdie, Nike Trainers, EDL) is simply a step too far, reeks of that invented word 'Islamophobia' and thus by default is racist, offensive to Muslims and so should be banned?
But have you noticed how the very freedoms they object to are deemed an inalienable human right when they need to express themselves? Be it wearing the burka, building a minaret or even living under Sharia law in a non-Islamic country, then freedom of expression is a must, and by being denied that right, Muslims have become the new Jews.
Which is why I wish to discuss a news story currently hitting the headlines in Australia. There, Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission has highlighted how the Islamic parents of a very small child who allowed their young daughter to hold a racist placard at a rally did her a terrible injustice. The rally during the Israeli/Gaza war of 2009 resulted in the child hosting a placard which read:
