As Sure As The Sun Will Come Up
Here comes the inevitable denials and obfuscations and voicing of fear of a "backlash" against all Muslims for the sins of a few extremists. Yeah, right"
CITY religious leaders fear that all Muslims could suffer a backlash after hardline clerics were exposed in a TV programme.A number of Birmingham mosques were featured in a Channel Four documentary about extremist preachers who delivered messages of hate and intolerance.Undercover reporters spent months filming cleric Abu Usamah, speaking at Green Lane Mosque, in Small Heath, condemning Jews, Christians and others, promoting 'holy war' and calling for British democracy to be replaced with an Islamic State.Representatives from Green Lane Mosque said they had launched an urgent investigation into Abu Usamah's lectures, while the head of the Jamia Mosque said the speakers were not regular members and had hired a hall to hold meetings.Today, Muslim leaders roundly condemned extremists who use the name of Islam to spread hatred but also questioned the intent of the programme makers.Dr Mohammed Naseem, from Birmingham Central Mosque, said: "It is disturbing that Channel Four focuses on these extremists who do exist in all kinds of societies."If you look at areas of the extreme Christian right you will find similar views."His remarks are not representative of the majority of Muslims and it paints a picture which is not realistic."He said: "They are a very small minority but they are being given a profile which is being magnified many, many times."Islam teaches us to be tolerant and love your neighbour across the region, this is what 99 per cent of Muslims will hear in Mosques."You know what I say to that?
