Is Islam a Single Nation-State? Should We Treat It As Such? And, Is That a Pacifist Position?
From RWCG:
Mangan brings forth the realist righty viewpoint of Tsarnaevaean terror:
I mean, we’re just fighting a nice little war (formerly at least two wars), using overwhelming military force, maybe a little torture, what the heck, but they deserve it. [...] The fact that all of our little wars lately has been against Muslim countries has not gone unnoticed either by Americans or the Muslims. And the Muslims are striking back in the only way they know how, by killing civilians.
Hold on. Slow this down for me:
Two twentysomething guys, one of them naturalized, who live in the Boston area, come from Russia/Kzyrzyzzgistan(sp?), and have Chechnyan heritage, bombed U.S. civilians because they were ‘striking back in the only way they know how’?
Striking ‘back’ for what?
You say Iraq? You say Afghanistan? I say what on earth does that have to do with two twentysomething guys, one of them naturalized, who live in the Boston area, come from Russia/Kzyrzyzzgistan(sp?), and have Chechnyan heritage?
Oh what’s that? Because they’re ‘the Muslims’ and those other places are also mostly ‘the Muslims’? And that’s it? That’s the connection we’re supposed to perennially weigh as meaningful when deciding whether to wage war against a place like Iraq or Afghanistan?
Uh, I guess so. But this doesn’t really add up to a criticism of the Iraq & Afghanistan invasions. (If it did, it would add up to a criticism of invading Any Single Place That Is Majority-Muslim, Under Any Circumstances. Can that be right?)
What it does add up to, however, is a claim that ‘Islam’ is a single unified nation and should be treated as such. Is that meant to be my take-away? Because if that’s my take-away, then ok, but realists/paleocons might not like my conclusion from that take-away. Hint: it would not be ‘less invasions’.
After all, if the Boston bombings perpetrated by these Chechen hipsters constituted ‘striking back’ for the, oh whatever, let’s say the Afghanistan occupation – then I say we should bomb, oh I don’t know, Iran in return, to strike ‘back’ for that, in the only way we know how. If, as part of our wise realism, we’re supposed to see ‘the Muslims’ as a unified nation now, that can go both ways you know, and the logic is identical.
