U.S. officials said there were at least six security-related incidents aboard American commercial aircraft days after the discovery of plot to blow up as many as 10 commercial jetliners from London to the United States. The suspicious incidents have raised concerns that Al Qaida terrorists have been conducting tests of U.S. and allied security measures through the incidents.Most of the incidents on the aircraft were not reported.
The most visible incident took place Aug. 16 when a female passenger was subdued by flight attendants and a passenger aboard a United Airlines flight from London to Washington Dulles International Airport. The FBI said that incident was not terrorist related. However, as a security precaution, F-15 jets escorted the aircraft to Boston’s Logan Airport.
“This may have been some type of penetration testing to see how our security services respond,” said one U.S. official about the incident.
The London plot revealed that Al Qaida terrorists continue to target both the United States and the U.S. transportation sector and that the terrorist group behind the September 11 attacks is still active in terrorist planning, officials said.
