LONDON — GERTZ -- Iran has fired and replaced the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in wake of a series of security blunders.
Iranian sources said supreme leader Ali Khamenei has fired IRGC chief Gen. Yahya Rahim Safavi in wake of Kurdish and Arab unrest in Iran. Safavi, blamed for increasing insurgency activity in Iran, was replaced by Maj. Gen. Mohammed Ali Jaafari, head of IRGC's army.

"Regarding your valuable experience and shining background at different times, and varied responsibilities in the Guards, I appoint you [Jaafari] as the commander-in-chief of this revolutionary service organization," Khamenei said on Sept. 1.
The 49-year-old Safavi, appointed an adviser to the military, was IRGC commander for the last decade. An Iranian government statement did not say why he was being replaced.
IRGC contains an army, navy and air force and has been responsible for Iran's strategic weapons. The 125,000-member force reports directly to Khamenei.

Jaafari was said to have been a leading element in IRGC's campaign to destabilize Iraq. In early 2007, Jaafari narrowly escaped being captured by U.S. troops in the Baghdad area.
I guess we know what gets you a promotion. Perhaps Safavi was not sufficently motivated to kill americans.
