Obama interfering with Israeli Government Formation

The Israeli political parties fall into two camps – Nationalist and Rightwing. Likud/Bibi lead the Nationalist Bloc. Kadim/Livni lead the Rightwing Bloc. The reality of the election is that Likud is in control. The Nationalist Bloc represents several votes over the majority of 61 needed. Further 50+ members of the new Knesset have pledged their support to Bib – only 28 have pledged to Livni. There is practically a zero chance that Olmert will ask a party other than Likud to form the next government beginning a 30-day period next Wednesday.

Except Obama can’t seem to stay out of the internal affairs of Israel.

The U.S. official position is that it looks forward to "working with any government," but in back-channel messages the Obama administration has made it clear it would like to see a unity government in Jerusalem over a narrow right-wing government which would in all likelihood result in a freeze in peace talks with the Palestinians.

Aides to Likud chairman Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed on Friday that Washington officials did indeed relay the message while associates of Kadima chief Tzipi Livni denied receiving such a message.

Why would he do such a low act? He is grasping at straws to save the horrendous job Mitchell has done over there. The division of Jerusalem, claiming religious sites to be international, and demanding safe passage across Israeli lands are just the tip of the insulting iceberg Mitchell has tried to force.

Add to this the appointment of an ambassador to Syria, the opening of talks with Iran, the offering of a peace treaty with North Korea, and we have the basis for an American administration that puts its concept of a group-hug foreign policy ahead of the realities of Israel.

With such a mentality, it is no wonder he wouldn’t hesitate to interfere with a sovereign nation’s right to select its own leaders.

I trust Bibi will tell the pup where to go.
