Solar Water Heater

What is Solar Water Heater?

Solar water heater is the technology of warming water utilizing heat energy of sun. During unavailability of solar energy, a conventional boiler can be used in order to make the water hotter.

Benefits of Solar Water Heater

  • Whole over the year hot year: Typically, this technology can serve whole year, though you will require to heat the water further with a boiler during the winter season.
  • Reducing your cost: As sunlight is free, so after initial payment of installation your hot water costs will be decreased.
  • Decreasing carbon footprint: It is the technology of green, renewable heating system and can minimize your carbon dioxide emissions.

How does Solar Water Heater work?

In the technology of solar water heater, solar thermal collectors are used. These collectors can absorb sunlight and collect heat. Solar radiation is captured by collectors. In the form of electromagnetic radiation, we get energy from solar radiation. These collectors are fitted on your rooftop. They collect heat energy from sun and utilize this energy in order to heat up water. It is stored in a hot water cylinder. In order to achieve your desired temperature, a boiler can be used as a back up for heating the water further.

Solar water heating panels are of two types:
  • Evacuated tubes.
  • Flat plate collectors are fixed on the roof tiles.

In order to provide some contribution to heating your home, larger solar panels can be used. The system could provide most of your hot water in the summer, but it is comparatively less during colder weather.

Maintenance

Typically, maintenance cost of solar water heater is comparatively very low indeed. Most solar water heater can provide a warranty up to ten years. Here, very little maintenance is required. After installing the system, your installer should leave written details of any maintenance checks that you can carry out from time to time, confirming that everything is working appropriately.

Most importantly, you may check yourself possible leaks on regular basis. There will have a strong smell, if any leak of anti-freeze occurs. You should contact your installer, If you observe this situation. Basically, you need to monitor your system to check whether it is functioning as per design. If hot water is not produced or the solar pipework is cold (when the pump is running) during warm, sunny days then you need to contact your installer again. Some installation companies offer an annual service check as per their service warranty.

Your system should be checked thoroughly every 3-6 years by an accredited installer. After this period of time, the anti-freeze which is used to protect your system in the winter season, will need to be replaced as it collapses over time and reduce your system's performance. Anti-freeze can survive better if the system is utilized all over the year and not left unexploited during the warmest weeks of the year. In a better maintained system, pumps can survive over ten years.
