Passengers feared they had been caught up in a terrorist attack when the westbound Central line train derailed between Mile End and Bethnal Green in east London yesterday morning.
About 900 commuters - many covered in dust - were led to safety along the tracks after being trapped in a tunnel for two hours.
Paramedics treated 37 people at the scene and eleven of them were hospitalised.
Transport for London said it was “very unlikely” that full service would be resumed in time for the morning rush hour, forcing commuters on to buses or alternative train routes.
The line between Liverpool Street and Leytonstone is still closed in both directions this morning as work continues to rerail the train and repair the damage.
The District Line is operating normally but congestion is likely at stations in the surrounding area until Central Line trains are fully restored.
The cause of the accident is yet to be established, although investigators were said to be looking at the possibility a “bale of material” caused an obstruction.
The Rail Accident Investigation Bureau is also conducting an investigation into the incident, while the British Transport Police said there was “no indication of any terrorist attack”.
Of course not. There is no indication.
