United States 'has no effective defense against ballistic missile attack'


North Korean ruler Kim Jong-Il, the Asian version of the Peter Sellers character in "The Mouse That Roared," has beaten the United States again, firing seven short- and intermediate-range missiles into the Sea of Japan as President Bush stood by helplessly.

Kim, who loves NBA basketball, said he would not compromise with North Korea's right to develop intercontinental ballistic missiles and nuclear weapons. Dismissing the prospect of United Nations sanctions, he said he was ready for "all-out war" with the United States and Japan.

"The general has declared that not even a tiny concession will be made to the imperialist U.S. invaders, our arch enemy," North Korean state television said.

U.S. intelligence sources said the key to North Korea's effort last week was not the Taepodong-2 flight, which lasted a mere 40 seconds. Rather, it was the launch of four extended-range Scud missiles, designed to fly up to 600 miles.
