The United States has linked a nuclear agreement to Iran’s role in stabilizing the Middle East.
Officials and diplomats said President Barack Obama has offered to approve a deal that would guarantee Iran’s nuclear weapons capability in exchange for promises by Teheran to maintain stability in the Middle East.
They said Washington would work with Teheran to stabilize such war zones as Iraq, Syria and Yemen.
The diplomat said Obama has relayed his approval for a P5+1 deal that would enable Iran to keep a large fleet of gas centrifuges.
"This marks Washington’s recognition that Iran is or will soon become a nuclear power regardless of Western sanctions," a European Union diplomat said. Officials and diplomats said this would enable Iran to maintain uranium enrichment as well as research that could facilitate nuclear weapons.
"Washington’s goal is to transform Iran into a responsible nuclear power," the diplomat said. "In this way, Teheran is seen as no different than India, Israel or Pakistan."
