MADISON (EAGNews) – The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction runs several programs that heavily emphasize racial issues in public schools.
Some feel that one of those programs – an Americorps operation called VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) – may go a bit overboard by encouraging white students to wear a white wristband “as a reminder about your (white) privilege.”
Geared towards high school students, the program “seeks to build capacity in schools and districts serving low-income families to develop an effective, sustainable, research-based program of family-school-community partnerships,” according to its Facebook page.
That sounds reasonable enough.
But the program’s approach becomes a bit suspect when one reads the Gloria Steinem quote on the top of its webpage: “The first problem for all of us, men and women, is not to learn, but to unlearn.”Fellow IBA writer, Nico comments:
So are black people going to wear wristbands that tell them that killing people is not okay, or drugs are not a replacement for food, or stealing is not considered legal, gainful employment?
Are Pakistanis going to be wearing wristbands that having sex with goats is gross and wrong on so many levels, that smelling bad can be cured by using deodorant and having a low IQ is not the norm?
Are Muslims in general going to be wearing wristbands that tell them that raping young girls is not okay and blowing innocent people up is not a sport that should be payed?
Are Mexicans going to be wearing wristbands that tell them that crossing the border illegally into the US is illegal no matter how poor or stupid or brown they may be. And when Arizona enacts laws to tackle illegal immigration the Mexicans illegals don't have a right to protest against that since they illegally entered the country hence don't actually have a say?
Oh wait, but all of the above would be considered gross generalizations about a race or a people wouldn't they? Even on this blog people'd be shouting "racist!" at me for saying that (and for good reason, not all blacks are criminals or drug addicts and not all Mexicans are in the US illegally).
Ah yes, but when it comes to "white" people, it is fine to assume they all either are privileged or think they're privileged. Because you know, racism directed toward white folks is just fine. Oh its not even racism, its just facts.
