U.S. diplomatic sources said Al Qaida-aligned operatives have been following Americans and employees of U.S. diplomatic missions. The U.S. Embassy has not identified the insurgents, but has informed Yemeni authorities.
On Dec. 5, an unidentified gunman sought to force his way through the U.S. Embassy's front gate. He was stopped by embassy security and the two sides exchanged gunfire. The assailant was shot and arrested.

Hours later, the embassy was closed and staffers were ordered to stay home. The facility was reopened on Dec. 6.

On Nov. 18, the U.S. Embassy reported that a Yemeni man had been following foreign women to their homes. The embassy the followed stalker's car and obtained its license number.
