China said a U.S. naval vessel was conducting illegal surveying activities off its southern island of Hainan, a Hong Kong television website reported on Tuesday, after the Pentagon said Chinese ships had harassed the vessel in international waters.
"The U.S. navy vessel concerned has been in China's special economic zone conducting illegal surveying activities," said a statement from the Chinese embassy in Washington, reported by the website of Hong Kong-based Phoenix Television (news.ifeng.com).
"China cannot accept these baseless accusations. China demands that the United States halt all illegal surveying activities," said the statement
This ship whose top speed is 10-12 knots, and is unarmed was in international waters. The last time the USA was challenged over this issue, and EVERY time the USA has been challenged over this issue, the result was the same as it was in 1986 in the Gulf of Sidra.
This ship was run off by multiple trawlers who threatened collision at sea. The US ship drove them back several times with FIRE HOSES.
US Navy enforcement of international water passage rights are essential for this nation. We should be sanguine that the Chinese have unquestionably set this up. We should EXPECT Type 93 subs to be waiting and react accordingly, but the response should leave no doubt in the minds of China as to the resolve or lack of same in the president and those whose duty is to carry out the orders he gives.
The world awaits Mr. Obama's response which so far has consisted of ORDERING THIS UNARMED VESSEL OUT OF THE AREA CHALLENGED BY CHINESE TRAWLERS.
It doesn't matter what the ship was doing, it was in international waters...TWELVE MILES.
