When Buchanan won the 1856 election the disorganization and partisan divide had split ALL political parties, but was 100% pure domestic.
In 1854 Kansas had decided to allow the slavery question to be decided locally. The Whig party had self destructed between the ‘practical’ who ran PRESIDENT Millard Fillmore and the radicals, who formed the Republican party and ran John Fremont. The Democratic party was in the midst of suicide splitting between the Douglas factions and the Buchanan factions.
Buchanan won over a split Whig-Republican vote, and then he lost control of his own party to the Douglas faction
Party affiliations were mixed and revolt all around was in the air. In 1857 there was a HUGE economic panic (2008 anyone?) which found MANY banks totally overextended and without capital. The Republican party blamed Congress for stupid policies.
A war with the Mormons broke out, in the Utah Territory. And then the minority party WON CONTROL OF THE HOUSE in 1858, amid the clear failures, and ideological divide the nation was drowning in
Roger Taney, the execrable Chief Justice of SCOTUS worked with Buchanan over the Dredd Scott decision.
Incompetence, incorrect ideology maladjusted to the world as it really was and inaction.

Trump, Carson and Fiorina are performing this same function on the other side as we see the inaction of the president and the pressure on a Paul Ryan who FAVORED the top secret TPP, and is unacceptable to the New Republican Radicals there.
The national debt is $18 trillion. The majority party can achieve little and doesn’t try.
Our national jobs market is a slave to the lowest cost the law allows, which is NOT WITHIN THE USA.
We wonder how much of the circuitry in our planes, tanks, ships and subs is manufactured in Shenzen, along with those jobs that Steve Jobs told Obama WILL NEVER COME BACK.
Meanwhile, Syria, ISIS, Intifada, Israel, Yemen, Iraq, Taliban, Iran, Russia, China, Pacific Islands, aging DEMORALIZED nuclear forces, UGH!
We have those on both sides perceived as radicals who are CORRECT in their observations about this nation.

Last night it was clear Bernie Sanders won (IMHO). He did so by pointing out his CORRECT observations about the jailed and unemployment. He has CORRECTLY observed that the govt at present works for the few (neatly sidestepping that, in fact by doing so, those IN the political class working for the benefit of the few are NOW THE FEW). Nor did he have any specific ideas for more jobs, although the lot of them seem intent on giving a lot of free this and that.
