The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party presidential candidate has been asked to reconsider choosing a woman as his running mate by religious factions within the party.
The Maldivian Democratic Party has a Religious Council within the party and the Head of the party’s Islamic Council has said a woman contravened Islamic principles, shortly after the announcement that a lady, Dr Aminath Jameel will run alongside him in the upcoming elections.
The head of the Islamic Council is a Saudi educated mullah who has previously protested the law requiring that the minimum age for marriage be 18.
The mullah is saying - no surprise here - "a woman should not be a ruler in an Islamic country. He said it contravenes Islamic principles.”
