Yemen has been taking hundreds of millions of dollars from the United States to help fight Al Qaida while also maintaining laboratories of jihad to generate new cadres of Al Qaida operatives.Consider Al-Iman University, established in 1993. Western intelligence sources regard the university as a conduit for Al Qaida and even containing a military wing. In October 23 people, including four Europeans and three Australians, were arrested for links to Al Qaida. All of them were students at Al Iman.
Al Iman President Abdul Majid Al Zindani defended his institution, which has nearly 5,000 students. Al Zindani has been designated a "global terrorist" by both the United States and United Nations.
President Ali Abdullah Saleh has not attempted to close down Al Iman, largely financed by Saudi Arabia, which blocks foreign scrutiny. Indeed, Saleh praised the university during a visit on Nov. 12. The president has served as a keynote speaker at the university's graduation ceremony.
Sources said Al Iman seeks to appeal to the Western jihadist. John Walker Lindh, a U.S. citizen, studied at Al Iman before he left for Pakistan and Afghanistan, where he joined Taliban.
