Maldives: Fear of Christianity takes centerstage in first multi-party elections

All parties are claiming to be the ones who will protect and teach true Islam and accusing the other of trying to bring Christianity!!!

President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) has said the largest opposition Maldivian Democratic Party must “refute with supporting evidence” the DRP’s claims it aims to spread Christianity.
At a Saturday press briefing, DRP media manager Ibrahim Athif Shukoor said that although the constitution states Islam is the state religion,“Only the leader [Gayoom] will give life to the constitution.”
Responding to the allegations, MDP vice president Ibrahim Hussain Zaki said, “[Gayoom] is using religion as a weapon."
And in a televised press briefing later on Saturday night, the MDP counter-accused the DRP of spreading secularism.
“Refute”
The DRP has repeatedly alleged the MDP will bring other religions to the country, and wishes to spread Christianity in the 100 per cent Islamic Maldives.
On Saturday, journalists questioned them on the basis for these claims. But Athif Shukoor said, “If people are saying they spread Christianity, it is their responsibility to refute it, with supporting evidence.”
Three days before the country’s first multi-party election, a falsified email was circulated in Malé, purporting to show the MDP was trying to create a “multi-religious place” in the Maldives.
According to DRP newspaper Hamaroalhi, presidential spokesperson Mohamed Hussein Shareef (Mundhu) produced the email at a press conference, saying: “This is interfering into our country’s sovereignty.”

Opposition Scholars Say “Dangerous Time” For Islam
The country is facing a “dangerous time” for religion, head of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) religious scholars’ council Adam “BA” Naseem has said, blaming a lack of religious education and public discourse about the afterlife.
At a press briefing on Sunday, Naseem and scholars from the religious conservative Adhaalath party set out their religious agenda on behalf of the newly founded MDP Jumhooree Alliance, which will back MDP presidential candidate Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) in a second round of elections against incumbent president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
“The country has fallen into a deep hole economically, socially and religion-wise,” said Naseem. “Due to the policies of this government established in 1978, our beliefs have been distorted.”
